Showing at Summer Art Thread LCB Depot, Leicester 26:08:17 11:00- 21:00 An expansive collaboration between Leila Houston, participants and musicians. Taking the echoes of thumps, crashes, steps and conversation recorded over two days (clay models collaboratively sculpted, activities, videos and recordings), Leila collaborated with musicians to develop a responsive sound work to be played between five speakers and created further installation. This project was supported by Arts Council England Music by Sepia Sun and Harvey Sharman-Dun With special thanks to Natalie Beech, Melissa Fletcher, Tove Dalenius, Jodi Shadforth, Jimi G Jenga, Sarah Campbell, Denny, Craig Ashenden, Courtney Askey, Myoptik, Damon Gibbons, Anna Lucas, Two Queens Studio and LCB Depot. And with thanks to all artists, participants and friends who helped to contribute to this project. edit. in relation to recent work - Artists and Books
Janet Cardiff worked with the Salisbury Cathedral Choir to record 40 individual singers, playing each voice through its own corresponding speaker. The speakers are carefully positioned in eight different groups of five, responding to the structure of Tallis’s complex vocal piece, or motet. Each group forms a choir of five singers with different vocal ranges: a bass, baritone, tenor, alto and soprano. The eight choirs produce harmonies which blend into a polyphonic landscape of sound. Visitors are encouraged to walk among the speakers to hear the individual voices, as well as the immersive sound of the motet. Cardiff said: ‘I am interested in how sound may physically construct a space in a sculptural way and how a viewer may choose a path through this physical yet virtual space.’ Janet Cardiff’s Forty Part Motet books
THOUGHTS GOING BACK TO EXPERIENCING THE SPACE and not wanting to show only a past event. There are so many layers to play with and yet need to be concise. It ll be the usual, work on all layers then edit it down. (no pressure)
This week I will be in touch with a few musicians to collaborate on sound. Im interested in what can be develops between a number of speakers spaced around the room. (no pressure) PART two: A LOCAL VOICE. (collective sculpture/austerity today project) 2 QUEENS PROJECT SPACe.8/6/2017 Really good weekend with the Collective Sculpture project. Great feedback. Looking forward to my first day off in weeks today before the final leg to produce catalogue and edit all the footage and recorded sounds for a one day exclusive installation at Summer Art Thread on 26th August at LCB Depot. This work hopes to bring my research, my studio practice and these happenings into one room. Seriously, THANK YOU to Tove Noorjahaan Dalenius, Jodi Shadforth, Courtney Askey, Sarah Campbell, Jimi Jenga and Craig Ashenden for your time and work on this part of the project and huge THANK YOU to everyone who took part - many even travelled in the rain and got taxis. Thankyou to everyone who has also supported this work at Two Queens with space, feedback and rehearsal time at the crits (massive vital support network for artists in Leicester!). Special thank you to Denny the dog (our radio miked up bundle of bubble-chasing joy). Today we had tea and cake at the front in the sun before starting. Oscar (Labrador) came also which was a nice surprise. (click on small images to enlarge) (click on small images to enlarge) Tove hard at work uploading from all the memory cards Excellent day. Have lots of material / sound to work with, the palette to developed layers of space using conversation and interaction at Summer Art Thread on 26th August.
I employed an amazing artist yesterday who gave regular technical support throughout the morning and took brilliant photographs (Tove Noorjahaan Dalenius - photography below), which show the environment clearly. Impressive work! Part Two Today! New group new experiences - and in part with how it was left a new space! In search of Genuine: A Local Voice. The Collective Sculpture space. It begins with an exclusive, unfinished installation (more finished than below) for people to change and interact with tomorrow and Sunday!
I'm really excited by this week's developments in the space, particularly the shredded newspaper, hanging piece, it's turned out better than I actually imagined. I worked late into the night using each strip, as I would paint on the palate to create a form. I still need to stick the headlines on at the bottom. Conceptual and a thing of beauty. Here is some photos of this week in the space and building the work. Thank you to everyone who has helped on this project! |
